Our Lady of Grace Orphanage – in Kenya
In 2009, Sandra our third daughter broke the news to us that she would be traveling to Kenya to visit and help an orphanage, Our Lady of Grace, for one month.
We were torn between letting her go alone in a foreign and potentially dangerous expedition, and allowing her to fulfill her dream of helping the less fortunate.
However, she had already made up her mind. All we could do was pray for her safety through God’s grace.
Throughout the month of April 2009, we looked out for her emails daily through which she kept us abreast of her activities in Kenya. It was a joy to read her daily blogs and to know that she was safe. We were very glad to see her mature with each passing day, and learn from the vast experience of Mama Rita.
This is her blog packed with her adventures and experiences captured in photographs and videos:

Enjoy reading, especially Sandra’s daily journal entries.
Clash of the Bands
Clarissa’s band “Take Cover” won the ROCK Band competition!
They won themselves $3000 and a Casio Keyboard. The monies from auction of the keyboard will be donated to a needy organization.
“Clash of the Bands” was A ROCK & POP band competition bringing together the team spirit of percussion jam, guitar, drummer and vocalist.
When Clarissa joined ACS International in 2012, she was selected to be in one of the school’s rock band group whom they called themselves “Take Cover”. After winning the school’s band competition at “Celefest” which earned them a chance to perform in Hard Rock café, they plucked up courage to compete further in an international competition “CLASH of the BANDS 2013.”
The groups from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand competed in the finals on 23 June 2013. They were judged by two music examiners from Trinity College London and the Music Director of Republic Polytechnic’s Cultural Centre.
‘Odyssey’ – Help me make it happen for OLOG
Help me make it happen for ‘Odyssey’
On 25 Sept 2013, I was one of the many named recipients of this email from my youngest daughter Clarissa.
Hello,
I’m writing to let you know about ‘Odyssey’.
Take a moment to check it out on Indiegogo and also share it with your friends. All the tools are there. Get perks, make a contribution, or simply follow updates. If enough of us get behind it, we can make ‘Odyssey’ happen!

I was surprised, yet pleased to know that my little one has grown up to have a big heart for the less fortunate.
So I did my part as a mum……

To all my dear Friends,
Hope that this email finds you well.
Our youngest daughter, Clarissa, has been doing art as a subject in her school, ACS International.
The school is holding an art exhibition this week.
We hope that you are able to give some time this Friday to come support at the opening of this art exhibition titled ‘Odyssey’.
Mothers, as we are always doing something to assist them,… I am also writing to help her inform friends that besides the Art exhibition, she is also prepared to part with her works of Art for Charity.
She is selling these precious handiwork in support of a Girls’ home in Kenya, “Our Lady of Grace”. (OLOG)
Just a brief about this home:
It was started by Mrs Rita Balachandran, wife of the famed late Orthopaedic Surgeon and Professor N Balachandra.
With the legacy Prof N Bala had left her, she has devoted much of her time to build a home to house young girls that have been orphaned, lost and sexually abused in Meru, Kenya.
Some of these girls are as young as age 5.
Rita now has more than a hundred girls in this Catholic home.
Sandra, our 3rd daughter was there to help in the OLOG in 2009. She was very touched by the effort and money Rita has put in to help all these innocent girls.
Clarissa, in her final year of her IB, would now like to do her part by contributing to this home, OLOG, a Catholic home for young girls.
She has created “INDIEGOGO” a weblink for this cause.
(Please see the appeal email and link from Clarissa.)
We hope that you too can be a part of this project.
Look forward to seeing you there at the Art Exhibition “Odyssey” this Friday evening.
Best regards,
Janice

I should say that the exhibition and her fund-raising section turned out a success. Clarissa was very moved to see even my old SCGS friends come and support her cause.
By 14 October, she had raised $5,800 and presented the cheque to Rita.
This is just a start for the movement to help the little abandoned and abused girls in Kenya. Clarissa and her sisters have the intention to find ways to do more.
Angkor Wat International Half Marathon
In 2012, I signed the whole family to run in this race. The race was in support of children and the disabled in Cambodia.
It took place on 2 December 2012, a significant date indeed as it coincided with the birthday of a member of the family. This would be a novel and memorable way of celebrating, coursing through Angkor with the family. It would also be a wonderful opportunity to see Angkor by foot. As we run round the periphery and through Angkor many of the villagers will be by the road cheering the runners. My family would get to see the warmth and cheerfulness of the Cambodians in their very simple lifestyle.
Young and old came out of their villages, lined the roads and encouragingly cheered us on as we ran the 21 km route in rather hot weather as the morning sun rose higher. They clapped and cheered, offered us drinks, stretched their hands out to touch. There were also mothers with their babies on their backs, some sitting with young ones by the roadside to watch the runners run by.
The route through the UNESCO World heritage sites of Angkor Wat, the Bayon, Preah Khan, Ta Prohm and the impressive Elephant Terrace almost at the end of the race were certainly sites to remember especially when we felt hot and tired but the excitement of seeing the spectacular sites just spurred our energy level to the end.
I would certainly like to return to run the marathon, the next time with a better handheld camera.
